What is Sound Healing?
Can you think of a song which had a powerful effect on your emotions? How about the sound of a car accident happening nearby; what would that do in your body? Do you feel a bit uneasy just thinking about that sound?
It’s clear that sound and music are powerful forces in our lives. Imagine what might be possible if you could harness that power to create a positive, healing reaction instead.
This is Sound Healing, a form of energy medicine or vibrational therapy designed to have a measurable effect on organs and tissues as well as brainwave activity which changes the way a person feels, functions and responds. It is also effective in the body to induce a state of calm, which tends to boost the function of the immune system. Often, emotional and mental difficulties can also be resolved.
Sound healing is based on vibrational frequencies. Everything in the universe is made of energy which vibrates at its own unique speed or frequency. If a person is in pain or feels out of balance it may be because their subtle energy system is blocked in one or more areas, in addition to any physiological issues. The task of a sound healer is to match this specific frequency, using tools, technique and intention in order to release the pain, and assist the person in healing body, mind and spirit.
Dissolve and Release Blocks, then Step Into the Vibration of Well-Being
Sound Healing works in 3 main ways:
~ Matching the frequency or vibration of a block, in order to dissolve it, much like an opera singer breaks a glass with her voice when she matches the frequency of the glass.
This is the method used in hospitals for dissolving kidney stones with ultrasound. The patient is immersed in a tank of water, which is an excellent sound conductor, and sound waves are directed at the kidney stones. The ultrasound waves break the kidney stones into small enough pieces to pass out of the body without pain or surgery.
In sound healing, we may use the voice, music, drums, Tibetan or crystal bowls or tuning forks rather than ultrasound for this method. I like to call it the “roto-rooter” of energy healing, because it’s so powerful.
~ Making or re-creating the sound of an event or energy you’d like to release.
A typical situation for using this would be a car accident. In the case of a traumatic incident like that, your brain registers everything that happened in that moment, the sights, smells, emotions, physical feelings and sounds. To help release that stored energetic trauma from your system , it can be helpful to have a trained Sound Healer guide you to find and release that energy that may be slowing your recovery.
Once found, you set your intention for healing and release, then make the sound you heard that day, whether it is the sound of metal bending, or something else. This is incredibly effective, and for most people, permanent. It really is not something you want to try on your own, even if you are a trained healer yourself. It’s best done with a “spotter,” another person who can help you let the energy go without reliving the trauma.
~ Entrainment; using specific sounds to bring you into a particular state of being, such as relaxed.
If you’ve ever found yourself smiling and relaxing as you listened to a certain song, you’ve experienced this kind of sound healing. One moment you felt stressed out, but after listening to the song, you felt good. When you find yourself in a state of overwhelm, stress, pain and unease, entrainment to a state of peace and calm is the first step to any kind of deeper healing.
Songs are not the only way to do this, however. There are branches of science which study brain wave function and how to help people relax and move into brainwave states which are naturally helpful and healing. Hypnotherapists use a version of this to help people access the power of the non-conscious mind in order to choose more empowering beliefs and habits.
Sound healers use entrainment to help people focus on and actually experience the state of being they want. This may mean helping a person into deep relaxation, restful alertness, feeling more grounded, and so on.
Another use is best described by example. Let’s say you find yourself often stressed out by financial issues. You can’t seem to stop worrying, and this anxious feeling follows you around and shows up on your face as new lines in the mirror. Using entrainment, a sound healer will help you step into the opposite state of being – where you feel peaceful, capable, certain and even happy, no matter what is happening in your life situation. Once you have experienced that, you’re given a signature sound of your own to make whenever you catch yourself falling into worry, so you can choose peacefulness instead. The sound serves as an anchor and a pathway, to get back to that state of being when you choose to.
